Abstract
In order to minimize the harmful effects of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on neonates, Octopus were created in Denmark - as a resource for humanization. They are characterized by crochet octopuses, whose spiral tentacles resemble the umbilical cord, suggesting it calms the newborn and prevent him from pulling the threads of monitors and feeding tubes. Our objective was to analyze the immediate responses of heart rate, respiratory rate and peripheral oxygen saturation after ten minutes of placing the Octopus and to register the occurrence of adverse events. This is a cross-sectional study of case series and of convenience sampling composed of 10 preterm infants. Our results did not bring statistical differences in any of the three variables during the studied time, concluding that its use does not entail risks. Further studies are needed to evaluate the use of Octopus with longer sampling and time.
