Abstract

Introduction: the non-steroids anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are medications frequently used for pain and inflammation relief and has huge prevalence of use among higher education students.

Objective: this study is meant to perform the analysis of the indiscriminate use and the most relevant side effects developed because of these medicines.

Methodology: the article is based on a transversal-quantitative study, made with the results of a self-applied questionnaire answered by Marketing and Journalism undergraduates, with post-results descriptive evaluation.

Results: the data showed that the use of NSAIDs among Marketing and Journalism students is significantly high, showing that all of them self-medicated with NSAIDs at least once, and most of them chose self-medication because close people recommended it, as well suggested which drug to use. The most common side-effect seen is sleepiness, the major cause for use is pain and the most frequently used medication is dipyrone.

Conclusion: the results are, in majority, correspondents to the authors’s expectations, which were based on bibliographic search.
